Joe McGuigan set his sights on becoming a top performer at Aspray right from the beginning of his journey with the company in 2013. He wasted no time in his pursuit of excellence. Recognising that the highest-performing franchisee was located in Northern Ireland, Joe took the initiative to book flights and personally observe the methods of the top-performing franchisee at the time. This experience proved to be eye-opening and invaluable to his own growth within the organisation.
Upon his return to Scotland, Joe immediately embraced the challenge. His unwavering determination and proactive approach to business became evident. He firmly believed that success was not a matter of waiting but rather a result of taking initiative. In his first year, despite being set a target of £200,000 in turnover, Joe aimed even higher. When the year came to a close, he celebrated achieving a remarkable 150% of his target, concluding the first year with an impressive £300,000 in turnover.

Joe swiftly established relationships with local letting agents and property managers, a novel approach within the Aspray network that had previously focused primarily on insurance brokers. These relationships yielded a consistent flow of work for Joe’s business, prompting him to go above and beyond to ensure their satisfaction. His commitment extended to providing advice on claims and even responding to emergencies such as storm damage on Boxing Day or visiting landlords to assess uninsured damage.
As the letting agents came to be part of the Aspray referral scheme, Joe elevated his service further by offering training to their staff, integrating digital updates directly into their systems, and becoming their go-to expert whenever property damage occurred. His success with letting agents ultimately shifted the company’s narrative, leading to the inclusion of this approach in the induction process for all new franchisees.
Joe’s innovative thinking extended to his relationship with contractors. He implemented a system where he guaranteed them jobs if they referred work to him, a process that continued to stand as a testament to his collaboration with contractors. This approach, initially unique to Joe, soon gained recognition and adoption among other franchisees.

Joe realised the importance of building a team that shared his commitment to customer satisfaction and a drive for continuous improvement. His team, comprised of long-standing employees, including his son Ryan, embraced a philosophy of always lending a helping hand. Their dedication played a pivotal role in achieving and surpassing goals. During his initial five-year term, the company witnessed a growth of 28%, but it was the acquisition of a second territory in 2017 and the addition of more staff that resulted in a staggering 269% growth during his second franchise term.
Going above and beyond for customers became the norm for Joe’s team, and he has always expressed immense gratitude for their unwavering support, especially during recent years when his deteriorating eyesight prevented him from driving. Despite this challenge, they continued to exceed targets, culminating in Joe’s remarkable achievement of securing the top spot in every category at the Aspray 2023 conference.
